SYNCS Designs

Graphic designs for the Sydney Computing Society

Experience

Applications: Canva

Duration: September 2020 - September 2023

Purpose: To advertise SYNCS events, and sponsorship career opportunities and events

My Role

Being the past branding manager for SYNCS (Sydney Computing Society), it was my responsibility to design a variety of content for the society. These designs are displayed on a number of platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord, and the SYNCS website to advertise the society's culture and opportunities. Occasionally, these designs are also printed to be set-up around the University of Sydney campus.

Design Process

My design process begins by identifying the theme of a event by reading through event descriptions provided by the event organisers. As I am a design student, it can be complicated for me to understand theme of the event as it is all computer science related. I typically gain inspiration from a quick research session to grasp the meaning of the event or by scrolling through the number of design elements Canva is able to provide through the input of a few keywords

The SYNCS Brand

Throughout my time in SYNCS, I have constantly experimented with the graphics as there are no rules or major guidelines that I am required to adhere to. With this in mind, I have created my own personal guidelines for the SYNCS brand. These guidelines relate to a desired perception that I believe SYNCS must achieve: friendly, fun, and youthful. These traits for the SYNCS brand are essential for capturing the attention of students and encouraging engagement with the society through events.

Company Advertisements

For sponsor events, a company's brand colors and overall theme are followed. It has been difficult to gauge whether these designs were effective in maintaining the company's brand as there was typically no direct contact and no feedback, but I have understood through trial-and-error that the characteristics of a SYNCS event should differ from a sponsor-held event. There is a more professional and simpler look that is expected from sponsored events which I hope to have conveyed through the graphics.
